Be prepared for this one to hurt. 20KB is roughly the size of a paragraph of formatted text, and fitting a photograph into it means giving something up visibly. This page will get you there, but it would be dishonest to pretend the result will look like your original.

What 20KB actually buys you

At this budget, roughly 20,000 bytes have to describe every pixel. A 300×400 headshot has 120,000 pixels — so each pixel gets about a sixth of a byte. JPEG achieves that by throwing away most of the fine detail and keeping the broad shapes and colours. Faces remain recognisable. Textures, fine hair, fabric weave and background detail do not survive.

A full-resolution phone photo has 12 million pixels and cannot be described in 20KB at any quality setting whatsoever. When you feed one in, the tool will reduce the dimensions substantially — often to a few hundred pixels wide — because a small sharp image is far more useful than a large smeared one.

Crop before you compress

This is the single most effective thing you can do, and it matters far more at 20KB than at any larger target. Every pixel you remove is budget freed for the pixels that remain. A headshot cropped tightly to the face will look dramatically better at 20KB than the same photo with a metre of background around it, because the encoder is no longer spending bytes describing a wall.

  • Crop to the subject and nothing else.
  • If the image is a document, crop away the white margins — they are cheap but not free.
  • Simple, flat backgrounds compress far better than busy ones. A plain wall costs almost nothing; foliage costs a great deal.
  • Greyscale is worth trying if colour is not essential — removing the colour channels frees a meaningful share of the budget.

Who asks for 20KB

Almost always an older institutional system: government examination portals, some visa and passport applications, legacy banking forms, and university admission systems built a long time ago and never revised. The limit usually dates from when it was written and is enforced by a validator nobody has authority to change.

If the form specifies dimensions as well as a size — many demand something like 200×230 pixels — set those dimensions first and then compress. Meeting both constraints separately is much easier than hoping one solves the other.
